The Service has formally accepted Raytheon’s GPS Launch and Checkout System.
The 2 November announcement of the acceptance of the GPS Operational Control System Launch and Checkout System (OCX LCS – also referred to as Block 0) signifies that the company met all contractual requirements when the system was delivered on 29 September.
LCS is a modernised and secure ground system complete with the computing hardware, operations center workstations and mission application software necessary to launch the first GPS III satellite and perform initial in-orbit testing.
The President of Raytheon Intelligence, Information and Services comments: ‘This is a major milestone for the programme, and it keeps the USAF on track to launch the first modernised GPS satellite into space next year. We have strong forward momentum on the programme, and we will deliver the full capability in 2021.’
Raytheon explains that LCS forms the basis for the full system delivery – referred to as Block 1 – which will provide higher accuracy and globally-deployed modernised receivers to ensure anti-jam capability for military users. It will also provide control of both legacy and modernised satellites and signals, including the new international L1C and modernised Military Code.
